[font=Comic Sans MS] Hi Folks,
I was extremely disappointed tonight at ABC News' giving Person of the Week status to Marilyn Musgrave (February 27, 2004). Her recent press fits in with the Gross Indulgence of Homophobia in this Country.
Here is my Email to ABC.

To ABC World News Tonight:
I was appalled at your choice of Marilyn Musgrave as Person of the Week.
This feature used to be about the "Nobility of Everyday People who make a difference." Now, with choices like Barbara Bush and other rich folks, you are minimizing the importance of the Common and Everyday Person. Today, you not only wasted praise on a public figure, but you took sides with the Conservative Wing of American Politics.
This experience makes me conclude that ABC News has lost the status it had for many years as a deeply professional organization that served as a watch against the tendency of government to obliterate individual rights and the powerful diversity of our country.
Today, you have erased the good that you have done in the past by fostering the doctrine of Marilyn Musgrave, a person who - by her very actions - shows that she respects only people like herself.
This is YOUR adding fuel to the fire that polarizes American Society. Also, in an election year, you are taking a political stance by naming this woman to such a prominent status. Would you extend the same courtesy to Barney Frank who was called 'Barney f*g' by Republicans a few years ago ?
I see no reason for taking a member of Congress and validating their religious and conservative choice in a week when a marginalized community of gays in this country have tasted a small morsel of freedom - the ability to consecrate their union like any citizen should have an equal right to do under the law. You are playing politics with such a choice, and adding your voice to that of the long tradition of Americans who hide their bigotry behind the Bible.
I suppose next week, you will choose Ashcroft as the Person of the Week for trying to invade the private medical records of thousands of women 'to make sure that there was a medical necessity for some abortions.'
A question for Peter Jennings is this: Is it just that the News Anchors make so much money now that they have forgotten what it is like to be a normal citizen? Can you only relate to the wealthy yourselves? If you can't see how profoundly you have changed over the past years, take a look at your old news footage from 25 years ago - and try to remember WHAT you were feeling then.
Until there is some indication of a 'regaining of conscience,' I will not be watching ABC news. You have betrayed my trust once too often.
It seems that 9/11 killed more than the victims. It killed the soul of American TV Journalism as well.
You people are screwing up. You have forgotten what it's really about.

I urge people to write to ABC and protest their validation of a woman who sees 10% of our population as 'other.'
