 A Buddhist message from a Non-Buddhist voice
« Thread Started on Dec 28, 2004, 11:54pm »

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possesions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will live as one

John Lennon, Imagine

Although he was not Buddhist (or at least as far as I know he wasn't) I feel this song is very Buddhist in how it describes a world in which peace has been achieved. We no longer see the world as a multitude of countries or religions because we now see the world as one, how we are all connected in one way or another. It no longer matter what possesions we have as money no longer holds importance nor does our status in society. We now see eachother as members of a beautiful family of sentient beings all capable of boundless compassion, tolerance and acceptance, and above all, peace. We may not all have attained Nirvana/Nibbana, but we are certainly making it easier for each other to reach it. The self no longer exsists because one has become the world. This is but my own interpretation of the song. Do you have a similar interpretation or do you feel something else about the message in this song? I'd like to know your thoughts. Thank you.
